MFL was awarded ISO 9002 Certification for the Quality Management System in the year 1995 and this Certification has been renewed twice in 1998 and the latest in 2001 with a validity of upto 2003. MFL is in the process of upgrading this to 2000 version.MFL has been always environmentally pro-active to make the environment cleaner and still cleaner with its main motto of performing better & still better.Since inception MFL has invested over Rs.64 crores for the installation of pollution prevention and abatement facilities both during earlier operation and during modernization and capacity upgradation activities.
Significant among them is the installation of a Tertiary Sewage Treatment and Reverse Osmosis System to treat and desalinate the city sewage for reuse in plant which has resulted in reducing the sewage inflow into sea and releasing 8% of fresh water to the city use. In addition during 1999 additional treatment systems have been installed at a cost of around Rs.60 lacs. By these activities 40% of effluents generated are being treated and recycled, thus making the production facilities of Ammonia, Urea and NPK units a total Zero discharge plant. |
A further sum of Rs.6.7 crores is being invested to achieve a much cleaner environment. In this connection current activities are in full swing to install a treatment and recovery system for cooling water blow down which envisages recovering a further 40% of the effluents generated. A 10% quantity of effluents generated is being supplied to a neighboring industry for their process use. These activities have achieved a recovery and reuse of 80% of effluents and supply of 10% of effluent thus making the unit to march towards "a near zero effluent discharge" status. The other schemes include continuous on line stack monitoring system for Urea & NPK Plant's stacks and up gradation of effluent handling systems. These are in line with MFL's philosophy of achieving zero discharge of effluent progressively.
Keeping all the above in mind and to provide a formal set up and recognition for the efforts expended in this direction, MFL went in for ISO 14001 Certification. Accordingly to demonstrate their commitment towards Pollution Prevention and Control, Environmental Protection and compliance to the related statutes & regulations and meet the law of the land MFL initiated activities in September 2000 to achieve ISO 14001 Certification. IRQS was selected as a Certifying body. |
Based on the verifications of the corrective actions taken both in the field and in the documents, which were found to be meeting the requirements of Environmental Management System, IRQS have awarded the Certification of ISO 14001 to MFL effective October 22, 2001 with validity upto October 21, 2004. |
During the Certification Function, Shri K Madhok, Managing Director, IRQS presented the Certificate to Shri U S Jha, Chairman & Managing Director of MFL on 29.1.2002. The function was presided over by Thiru R Thiruvengadam, Chief Inspector of Factories, Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Board of Directors of MFL were also present. |
